History of the Farm School

Why is it called the Farm School?
Contrary to what one might think, there are no animals or farm-based activities (sorry kids, no tractor driving!) at the Farm School.  Our name is taken from the original Farm School that began more than 35 years ago at the University of California, Irvine.  Until June 2007, the school was housed in the original Irvine Ranch farm buildings (some of the oldest remaining buildings in Irvine!).  Because the new independent Farm School continues the traditions and mission of the original Farm School, we kept the name.

Origins
The Farm School began as one professor's response to his students' lack of curiosity and initiative.  He wanted to make a school that fostered and encouraged true understanding, not rote learning.

What is the relation between the Farm School and the UCI Farm School?
After more than 35 years, the University of California, Irvine and the Farm School Elementary school have amicably parted ways.  Due to land pressures caused by increased enrollments and planned expansion, UCI let us know that they could no longer keep the school on its campus.  During this transition time, a group of parents formed a nonprofit (501c3) corporation known as the Farm School.
